For new board and surfaces being prepared for paint

Drywall finishing in the Iowa City Corridor

Joint treatment and surface preparation for residential drywall. Plan a finish that suits the room, the lighting and the paint you want to see every day.

The finish is the part you live with.

The boards establish the shape of a wall or ceiling. Finishing addresses the joints, fasteners and edges so the surface is ready for the next stage. The quality you see after painting depends on the condition of that surface as well as the paint itself.

Petra offers residential drywall finishing, including projects coordinated with our installation and repair work. Tell us whether the board is new, partially finished or part of an older room. Before taking over existing work, the surface and remaining steps need to be reviewed.

Choose the finish for the light in the room.

A broad window or lighting that skims a wall can make small surface variations easier to see. A smooth painted ceiling with cove lighting asks different things of its finish than a textured surface under softer light.

Discuss the intended finish and paint sheen before work is priced. Ask what surface preparation is included, where it stops and how the work will be assessed before painting. The phrase “ready for paint” should mean the same thing to everyone involved.

New and existing surfaces need a clear meeting point.

A repair or new section of drywall has to meet the surrounding surface. Sometimes the project calls for finishing a limited area; sometimes a larger surface needs attention for a consistent result. Review these boundaries rather than leaving them to be decided halfway through.

If an existing texture is involved, send a close photo and discuss the intended treatment. Texture matching or changing an entire textured surface needs its own assessment and agreement; neither is assumed from a general finishing request.

Include preparation, protection and the next trade.

Finishing involves more than the final sanding pass. The proposal should identify the starting condition, the surfaces included and responsibility for each stage. Plan access and room protection, especially if the home is occupied.

Interior painting can be coordinated with the finishing work. Confirm who primes and paints, when the surface will be reviewed and what cleanup includes.

  • Joints, corners, fasteners and affected surfaces
  • Agreed smooth or textured appearance
  • Room protection and access
  • Surface review before primer and paint
  • Separate painting scope where requested

Questions worth asking.

Is painting included in drywall finishing?

Only when it is listed in the scope. We offer interior painting, but finishing, priming and painting should be clearly identified so you know what is being priced.

Can you finish drywall installed by someone else?

Ask with photos and the current stage of the work. The installation and surface condition need review before we can confirm the remaining scope.

What about walls under strong natural light?

Tell us where the windows and lights are. Surface preparation and paint sheen should be discussed with those viewing conditions in mind.

Keep planning.
